Zamoskvorechie

Zamoskvorechie is one of the most interesting districts of the city. Being translated from Russian it means the place behind the Moscow-river, which is quite right if to look from the Kremlin.
The land with name Zarechie (Behind the river) was first mentioned in 1365.
It was narrow strip of the land just opposite the Kremlin.
In the place where Balchug Hotel is located now, there was the square with first public banya (Russian bath-houses), and later in Ivan the Terrible times  the first pub was opened.
In the nearest vicinity from the Kremlin garden settlement appeared, where prince’s gardeners lived.
There still Sadovnicheskaya embankment (Gardener’s embankment) exists as well as street and lane.
Zamoskvorechie of XVIII – first half of XIX century – this were enormous district with merchant’s buildings.
Main streets of this part are Ordynka, Novokuznetskaya, Pyatnitskaya and Polyanka.
Every name has its memories dated back into centuries, when the district was populated by Tatar tax collectors in 1300s (Bolshaya Tatarskaya and Tatarskaya streets and lanes), by Kazaks and Sheep fur handlers in 1620s (Ovchinnikovskaya Embankment, Kazachiy lanes), thereafter by smiths and coin makers in 1700s (Novokuznetskaya settlement and 5 Monetchikovsky lanes).
The air is filled with history here. That is why it is not wonder that The Tretyakov Gallery, the main museum of Russian Art is located there. There is nice pedestrian zone for tourist and citizens.
The district is perhaps the last remaining piece of land in Moscow where Soviet era buildings were not erected as many. To live here is to enjoy a true old city of Moscow living style as it was in 1800s when narrow streets were not marked by anything higher than 3 stories high.
Recently the district was developed by new elite residential complex buildings, such as those on Lavrushenskiy, Pogorelskiy and 2nd Kazachiy lanes.  This makes it possible to combine living in the old city with newest features of well-being.
There are a lot of restaurants and café, small shops and boutiques, banks, few good schools, famous big book shop “Molodaya Gvardia”
